What Is Riffdex? A Plain-English Guide to the First Exchange Built for Music

If a stock market exists for companies, why is there no market for songs? That's the question Riffdex answers. Here's who we are, what we do, and what you'd actually use it for.

Let's start with the simplest possible version, and then go deeper.

Riffdex is a marketplace where a song becomes something you can own, trade, and earn from, like a share of the music itself. Artists turn their songs into tradable assets. Fans buy in early and hold a real stake. And every time a song's asset changes hands, the artist gets paid automatically. No labels in the middle, no quarterly royalty wait, no guessing what a song is "worth."

That's the one-sentence answer. Now let me show you the whole picture.

Who is Riffdex?

Riffdex is a company and a protocol building the first financial market designed specifically for music. It was founded by an independent musician who lived the problem firsthand: someone who released their own music on-chain, watched the value it created flow to everyone except the artist and the fans, and decided to build the thing that fixes it.

The mission is simple to say and hard to build: treat a song like the living, earning asset it actually is, and give artists and fans a fair, open market to trade it in. Not a collectible. Not a subscription. A real asset class for music.

At the center of everything is a new idea called an AFT.

What is an AFT? (The core idea in one image)

AFT stands for Audio Fungible Token. It's the heart of Riffdex, so it's worth understanding.

Think of a song turned into thousands of small, identical, tradable pieces, like shares. Each piece is an AFT. Three things make it special:

It pays the artist automatically. A royalty is built directly into the token, so every time an AFT is bought, sold, or even sent from one wallet to another, the artist earns. Not once. Every single time it moves, forever.

It unlocks the music. Holding an AFT is your key to the song. Owning a piece isn't just a financial position; it's how you access and enjoy the music.

It's fungible, meaning every piece is interchangeable and divisible, so a song can have a real, liquid market with a live price, instead of being a single locked-up collectible.

This is why our tagline is "AFTs, not NFTs." The music world spent a decade trying to make songs into NFTs: scarce, one-of-one collectibles. But a song's value was never scarce. It's shared, it repeats, and it earns over years. That's an asset, not a collectible. The AFT is the shape music was always meant to have.

What does Riffdex actually do?

Riffdex is the exchange and toolset that makes AFTs work end to end. In practice, it does four things:

1. It lets an artist launch a song as an asset. An artist takes a track and turns it into its own AFT with a few clicks. Riffdex creates the token, sets up its market, and bakes in the royalty split. No coding, no middleman.

2. It runs a fair launch (presale). Before a song opens to the public market, early fans can buy in at a set starting price. This rewards the people who believed first, and it sets an honest opening price so no insider can front-run the crowd.

3. It's the marketplace where songs trade. Once live, anyone can buy or sell a song's AFT at any time. Prices move with real demand, like any open market. Every trade pays the artist, and the market is always open.

4. It pays everyone fairly, automatically. The royalty on every transfer is split in code: the majority to the artist, the rest to the fans who stake (lock up) their AFTs to support the song. Believing in an artist and earning alongside them become the same action.

You launch a song, fans buy in, the song trades, and value flows back to the people who made it and championed it. That's the loop. That's Riffdex.

What is Riffdex used for? (Who it's for)

The clearest way to understand Riffdex is to see what each person uses it for.

If you're an artist , Riffdex is a way to turn your music into an ongoing income stream and fund your career directly from your fans. Instead of waiting months for a small royalty check, you earn on the primary launch and on every trade of your song afterward, automatically, forever. Your most dedicated fans become your funders and your promoters, because now they win when you win.

If you're a fan , Riffdex is a way to genuinely back the artists you love and share in their success. Buy a piece of a song early, and if that artist grows, so does your stake. Holding the AFT also unlocks the music itself. For the first time, being a real fan, the person who found the song first and told everyone, actually means something you can hold.

If you're a supporter or investor , Riffdex is a new asset class: music as a tradable, cash-flowing market. You can back songs you believe in, stake to earn a share of their royalties, and trade in an open market that runs around the clock.

One product, three kinds of people, all pointed at the same outcome: the value music creates flows back to the people who create and love it.

Why did Riffdex have to build its own exchange?

Here's the part that makes Riffdex genuinely new, explained simply.

The feature that makes an AFT fair, paying the artist on every transfer, is exactly the feature that breaks every existing crypto exchange. Normal exchanges assume that when you send 100 of something, 100 arrives. But an AFT takes a small royalty in transit, so only 99 arrives. That tiny gap causes regular exchanges to charge the fee twice, misprice the trade, or fail outright. It's the reason "just list music on a normal exchange" has never worked.

So Riffdex built an exchange that expects it. Ours measures what actually arrives and charges the royalty exactly once: one fair fee, never two. It connects every song through a shared stablecoin hub (USDC on Base) so any song can be traded for any other, and it prices everything against a tamper-resistant system that can't be frozen or manipulated. And it's safe by design : an artist's royalty address can never be secretly changed, the first public price is the price early fans paid, and no hidden owner can pull the rug.

You don't need to understand any of that to use Riffdex. But it's why Riffdex can exist when nothing before it could.

Where Riffdex is today

Let me be straight about the stage, because honesty is the point. The full Riffdex protocol, including the AFT, the artist launch tools, the fair-launch presale, the music-native exchange, and the safety systems, is built and thoroughly tested. The hard engineering is done. What's ahead is a security audit, launch on Base, and rolling it out to artists and fans. We're building it in the open, and this is the beginning.

So, to answer the question in the title:

Riffdex is the first exchange built for music: the place where a song becomes a real, tradable, royalty-paying asset (an AFT), so artists earn on every trade forever and fans finally own a piece of the music they love.

Music was never supposed to be an NFT. It's an AFT. And for the first time, it has a market that knows the difference.

Remember the name. Riffdex, the home of AFTs.
